The 2010 RFTW was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and one that I would like to share briefly to serve to encourage others to participate if they haven't done so but have been considering it. I was honored this past summer to be able to take a few days away from the Marine Corps to ride with the RFTW from Shreveport, LA to Tuscaloosa, AL. During this ride I was privileged to have ridden with some of the finest American's I've ever had the pleasure to meet. The group of folks that make up the RFTW are nothing short of amazing. Their hospitality and sacrificial giving of themselves to participate in this monumental undertaking is something all American's should at least witness for themselves once in their lives if not actively participate in themselves. While my motivations for participating myself was out of respect for the Vietnam Vets who gave so much and were treated so poorly when they returned home...they ensured that following returning warriors would never receive such a home coming....and they certainly accomplished that mission. Having returned home from over a half dozen combat missions myself, I've always been amazed at our receptions, and my riding this past year was my way of saying thank you to all those that made sure that happened. However, I quickly saw first hand the hospitality and comrade shared amongst the family that makes up the RFTW as I was honored and humbled throughout my short two days with the group. From riding up front with "Too Tall" leaving Shreveport, to riding "Missing Man" from Meridian, to receiving my road name from "Hawgwash", it was a time that I'll soon never forget. Since returning from the RFTW, I've been making plans for 2011 and telling everyone that will listen how great an opportunity this is and that everyone should participate in one form or another if they are able. To all those that supported the ride, from those that cooked dinner and breakfast, to those who donated gas, to the organizers, road guards, platoon leaders, DPS, national guard and everyone who lined an over pass with a flag....thank you.
