It's just camping, Ray.  You don't have to bring the whole circus...

Hi Sidewalk,

We are looking at camping for SR for Arizona & New Mexico.  We just registered for our FNG trip.  This might be a dumb question but is it ok for a female to camp with you guys?

Hi Newbie,  I am a girl and I have camped the last four years with the Central Route.  Sidewalk can give you the Southern Route view on your question but as a girl I can tell you that it is like being with way too many big brothers.  They will watch out for you and be ready to help you with anything you need which is great.  On the bad side you will have to listen to them snore just like you would any brother.   I wouldn't go on the run any other way than camping!

Grumpy, Thanks for the feedback and great to hear.  I am more worried about cramping their style.  I am used to snoring and I am sure I will be too tired to care.  I will bring ear plugs just in case.  LOL

I will wait to hear their feedback.  Thanks again everyone for your support, your service and allowing us to ride with you!

Note to Newbie- You won't be a newbie very long- around here it's FNG and you only get to wear that moniker for one year.  Back in the day, newbies got all the worst chores and duty assignments.

Today, it is the other way around.  Newbies, or FNGs, are the most precious part of the ride.  You will find that the family will go way out of their way to make this the best experience you ever had, and you are deeply appreciated for honoring us with your presence.

Welcome to the Run For The Wall and camping on Southern Route!

To begin with, your honor and privacy will be totally respected as you camp.  You will probably be like the rest of the campers, male or female, finding that we are asleep as soon as our heads hit the proverbial pillows.  I have noticed in the past that the chatter ends early, and we get up around 5:30 AM to start breaking down equipment to pack up the bikes.

In Phoenix we have permission camp around the host hotel on ground they own.  There is room for a couple tents in near the pool, but the rest will be outside the building area.  I have a room reserved for those who want to have a shower- bring your own towel.  Uhhh one at a time on this one.  Or you may meet someone who will share their shower in the hotel- kind of a play it by ear deal.

We're still working on the New Mexico (Las Cruces) plan, the fall back option is the KOA and I will post in this thread when we have that finalized.  Naturally you are free to contact the KOA if you wish, but they resist giving us any deals.  It's about $15 if you go on your own, I think we can do better and we have some options in the works.  Stay tuned.

We'll probably do the shared shower hotel room deal in Grand Prairie Texas, as we have a church that has invited us to camp nearby on their property.  I'll post that one too.

The rest of the camping is fairly well set up like last year.  Some minor adjustments in a couple of the locations need to be made, but we do have places to stay all the way across.  We want our plan to be the best it can be, so have no fear.  I strongly suggest you have a little "shower kit" prepared so you can take a short bike ride to a shower facility.
(A thin but full sized towel, fresh undies, soap and shampoo, flip flops, and your favorite odor control products)

And........remain flexible... We never know if we'll be setting up or taking things down in the rain.

Yes, I was raised by wolves until the day I was captured by Child Protective Services...

Sidewalk,
Remember to try and find me at some of the hotels to use the shower. Especially Chattanooga where we stayed at the hotel you guys camped at last year.
Of course sometimes I will be late with duties and keeping Wrongway and Slammer in check, but as soon as I am sure they are not going to start any trouble you guys are welcome to use my room to shower if you can find me.

You have no idea how much I appreciate that shower offer!  Thank you!  Last year I went to take a shower at a room some guys had, and we had some of the best conversation on the trip.  So much of the best stuff is unplanned, it just happens as people meet and form friendships so quickly on this Run!

For the last two years we went behind the Days Inn and set our tents on the grass behind the parking lot.  It was a great spot- but apparently the hotel management objects.  We are welcome at the Heritage Best Western's grounds, so we'll take them up on that.  We can also camp at Thunder Creek Harley, but most of that ground is sloped.  We'll check further when we get there, at least we have camping covered.

I hope I'm not scaring people too much.  Last night I suggested people should be prepared and flexible like in case we're dealing with rain.... today I get a private email from someone who must have given that some thought and decided to book rooms!

In the stories to grandchildren I hope there will be less "I went on a motorcycle ride..." and more "I had one heck of an adventure!"

I can't help but remember that old Harley commercial where the kids ask Grandpa if he ever had a motorcycle.

"Well, I almost bought a Harley, but I decided to get aluminum siding instead."  The kids look at him blankly and one says,

"Let's go talk to Grandma."

Oh, yeah.  We get the message.

is there any tips as far as what things to bring to help make things more enjoyable camping?

I have my tent, sleeping bag, self inflating sleeping pad, inflatable pillow. Clothes and such are in one waterproof roll top duffle bag, the sleeping gear is in a waterproof roll top stuff bag, and the tent well its in the nylon zipper top bag that came with it.

I haven't camped much since leaving the military, and have never really camped out while on my bike.

thanks

I would think some type of chair, stool or something like that. If the ground is wet, it might help.

Gunslinger,

Plastic ground cloth to put under the tent, help keep things a little dryer during those very humid mornings.  Air pump for that self inflating sleeping pad .  I picked up a sleeping bag system from one of the surplus stores that had two mummy bags, a small light weight one that fit into a larger shell.  When both of them were together, they were quite warm.  Couple of small aa cell maglights.

Greatest lesson learned however was how things were organized on the bike.  Everyone has their own way to pack.  Load the bike, unpack, set up tent, put stuff in tent then practice unloading the tent, tear down and repack.   Sounds crazy but you will find a routine that will work best for you -- something repeatable.  Will help out on the road.

Mine was a bag where I had sleeping bag and clothing.  That fit on back seat with tent up top.  (tent did not cover access to things I would need en-route)  Would take tent off, setup, then throw bag into tent where I could finish setup undercover (which was handy when it rained).  Reverse in the morning, placed the bag on the bike, secured it down.  Took down the tent, secured it top.  Walked around, make sure I didn't leave anything then off to get in line early..

Welcome to the run and welcome home.

This kind of camping doesn't require much special equipment.  Coolers, cookstoves, lawn chairs, generators, fishing gear, rifles, waders, watercraft, all good but not here.  You won't need to prepare food, and if you want to roast marshmallows around the fire singing Kum Bayah you'll probably be by yourself.

We usually get to the camping area after the day's final activities where we set up tents, crawl in, and go to sleep.  The sound of zippers in the morning is a clue that people are stirring, and is a good time to stir yourself.  That will be around 5:30.  We will roll to the morning rally point, line up our packed bikes, and have breakfast before the daily rider's meeting.

When possible, I like to get the tent set up while there is daylight, then go find the shower.  It will vary as there are different camping venues, but showering in the morning cramps the time schedule.

We'll try to have a little meeting each day to brief everyone on that evening's camping plan.

For what it's worth, I have added a note in the classifieds about the lighted hats I sell.  The hats can eliminate need of a flashlight.  (Sidewalk's Biker Boutique)

I know, shameless plug...

Tent camping at the Arlington Assembly of God:
I haven't done the run for a couple of years, but I hope to this year. I stayed at the AG Church, and they were great. There is a large area behind the church to set up tents. Nobody bothered anyone else's tent, although there is really no formal security. They have a place next to the tent area where there are showers, toilets, furniture (to sit and read or whatever) outlets for chargers, etc. The church served meals. It wasn't far from the host hotel....an easy ride. Not far from essentials.....drugstore, groceries, etc. They also ran a shuttle to the "Wall" area in case you wanted to go to the Wall and didn't want to ride for whatever reason. Highly recommended!
