As a FNG thinking of participating in the 2012 Run To The Wall, I would like to know if all riders return as a group or on their own to travel?

Nickel Duce, last year I was an FNG. I also found out that I was joining a family. I found some great folks on this web site that I rode to DC with and then rode most of the way back home with them. Actually joining some of them for dinner at their homes on the way home. I think you will find yourself a member of the RFTW family and I would almost guarantee you will not have to ride home alone. Welcome Home

Thank You for your response it was very helpful. I did forget to ask is there a central processing segment that deals with hotels reservations or is the rider responsible for making all of their own reservations. If so, should I begin that now or wait until info on the 2012 run is available.

Nickel Duce,
That's why you're here on the forum, to meet the fine folks you will be riding across the country with- everybody has to go across twice if they do the whole ride. You will probably find the people in Oregon? near your start who will ride with you to Rancho Cuc, then from DC home again. It's all part of the adventure, welcome to the fam!

You will make your own reservations, but as the time gets near people will be looking to hook up with roommates to cut costs. In the meantime, the route stops are not yet carved in stone. Some are already making reservations anyway, and you can usually cancel or change them closer to the date.
Which route are you thinking? |

Some of the hotels are already booked full--Lewisburg WV is a prime example--

That is a good question, at this time I think I favor the south route thinking it will be warmer than the central route This may not be logical in thinking but its hard to say which way might be better ( if any ) since I ride a trike.

I'm a Southern Route guy myself.
This year I'll be helping coordinate the camping plan, so I'm not the expert on hotels. I do know from past experience that if the weather some evening is too much of a challenge, I will be looking for a motel somewhere in the area!
The snow the Central Route encountered last year in Williams AZ was a little unusual, and the cool weather Southern Route had in Arizona and New Mexico was also unusual. The cold rain under which we all departed Rancho Cucamonga was another new treat...
Gotta be ready for anything.

Concur with Shadow, two different routes, one mission, same great bunch of people.
Something to consider is where each route will travel and how you may react to the riding environment. That could influence which route you take. Example: Southern Route goes through a lot more desert than the central route -- longer time in heat on the upper end of the spectrum. Could be a challenge if you have a medical concern that does not allow you to tolerate heat so well. Central route does through the desert also, but only the 1st day and end up in some higher/colder elevations. By day 3 we hit Angle Fire, which is very high up/ around 8900 ft above sea level. If you have difficulty breathing in high altitudes, that could be a consideration. Each route will let you experience all kinds of different weather, and (most importantly) let you see exactly how much John Q Public actually does appreciate the vets and the people riding to remind the fallen and that we still we have people missing still that need to be brought home from multiple wars. Vietnam Vets get the welcome that they should have had from day one! (Can't undo the wrongs that were done, but the run and the communities supporting the run send one heck of a loud "Welcome Home" to those who served and continue to serve.) Speaking of which, a hearty welcome home!!! Welcome to the run!!! |

I am a SR gal, but Gallupe brings so thought to mind. SR rides in the desert some but like this past ride we didn't even need cool vest. Year before we needed them. CR has some high ALT riding and if you have any type of heart health issues might be the best. Look at the route and see if there is places you want to go on each and if no medicial issues then pick, heck if nothing else flip a coin

Welcome to the largest and the best family you'l ever have a chance to meet up with. Keepup with every thing going on on the site if you can If you need an answer too anythin there are those that will be able to help you. If you do decide to come on the southern route you will get to become a member of the proud and few "Trikes and Trailor Trash" of which (if I'm still alowed to ride with)I am a proud member. It looks as though there might be enough to make 3 platoons of us this year. Take your time and make the dession that will be right for you. Like they said try central one year and southern the next then you get the feeling of both routes. There are people from the northwest that meet and ride down to Rancho as a group.

Your question was:"I would like to know if all riders return as a group or on their own to travel?"
Answer: You are on your own to travel. You meet people from your area, where you live, and form a group to ride back home.
On the RUN-Hotel reservations are made by you. Some time in Dec. or Jan. RFTW will make a list and post it on the form for everybody to use and then you make your reservations. If you make reservations before that time you are taking a chance on the hotel. Sometimes RFTW does not use the same hotel as they did last year. You could be making a mess to clean up.
I hope this answers your question.
Welcome aboard

I HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS. SOME FRIENDS OF MINE ARE THINKING OF DOING THE RUN.
THEY DO NOT RIDE TRIKES AND WANTED TO KNOW IF THEY CAN RIDE IN PLATOON 3 SINCE WE ARE ALL FRIENDS, OR IS IT MANDATORY THAT THEY BE IN ONE OF THE OTHER PLATOONS? I THINK I READ THAT BIKES IN THE PLATOONS ( EXCEPT #3 )WILL/OR MUST RIDE SIDE BY SIDE. IS THIS TRUE? CAN THEY RIDE IN A STAGGERED STYLE? LASTLY, ROUGHLY HOW MANY RIDERS ARE IN A PLATOON? WHAT IS THE TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN EACH PLATOON DEPARTURE?
