I can't believe it, but I broke my big toe on my left foot!! I dropped the engine hatch on my boat on top of my foot and fractured the big toe and smashed the two next to it. Shifting will be a little sore I guess but I"m riding anyway. I"ll see ya on the "RUN"!!

Is it possible to get a heel shifter put on. Like on the Ultra Classic. Saves on the toe.

Heel shifter is a good option. My bike has one and while I do not use it often, I have used it. I am not the most coordinated guy but it was not hard to use, after a few starts it was not an issue. While not my favorite some boots with the zipper side opening may make getting your boots on a little less painful.

I think he mentioned somewhere that he rides a gold wing/battlestar galactica - I'm not really familiar with them, do they have a heel shifter? It'd be a great "work around" if that's the case

PartsMan, OUCH!
Don't know about the heel shifter, I have one and never use it but the steel toe sounds great. Heal fast and see ya on the Run! Now don't go do to the boat and drop the hatch on the other foot! Those things are heavy don't you know.

Hope you heal quickly. The heal shifter is a good idea. I have one but do not use it often. But while on a long ride that requires a lot of shifting the toe does get a little sore. Actually the heal shifter seems to shift more smoothly than when I use my toe(?)
I have had a few "Oh no not now!!" moments in the last couple of months. I normally run 5K's, lift weights,..etc. I normally have hurt myself a few times in the past and at my age I take longer to heal. This month alone I have goyyon a cortizone shot in my knee and shoulder.
I think at this stage I need to saran-wrap mayself and stand in the corner until it is time to leave for the Run.

From my experience last year going all the way, in the pack you do alot, alot of shifting since that is the primary way to adjust your speed in the pack along with the throttle. Put there is alot of shifting. I ride a road king with a heel shifter which initially took some practice getting use to. But now I can adjust between the road king and street bob without any trouble. My wife had a broken toe, one of the others that took a long time to heel with no pain when walking. The big one may be different.

My Tri-Glide came with a "heel' toe" shifter, couldn't get used to it, had enough on my mine just trying to find 5th gear!!
Both heel and toe shifters are the same, so I have an extra one if you can use it on your bike. I'll have it with me when I hit RC, if you need it"-it's yours. Tim |

Unfortunately, the stock Wing has just a toe shifter. I added after-market floorboards and a heel/toe shifter to mine when I made my short-lived detour to the dark side.
Parts Man - Hope that toe gets better quickly.

SOOO- I ADJUSTED MY SHIFTER WHERE I CULD SLIDE MY FOOT UP UNDER THE SHIFTER -TO THE INSTEP -N I WULD SHIFT-USING A SWIFT LEG JERK UPWARDS. IT WORKED. DOWN SHIFTING WASNT AS MUCH AS A PROBLEM , JUST PUSHIN DOWN. NOT HAVIN FEELIN IN UR FEET N LEGS MAKES IT AN ADVENTURE--LOL

very good point - IF- someone is not used to a heel shifter - being one second behind someone doing 70mph is NOT the time to learn, lol.... like I said before - last year during that 10 days, I down/up shifted more that I have in the past few years - total, lol

PARTSMAN...
Sounds like a very very good excuse to buy a new ride with a heel-toe shifter..

Partsman, The advice about a lot of shifting is very true. Also the advice about riding in a pack is not the place to learn to use a toe / heel shifter is true. If you can borrow a pair of steel toed boots and try riding I would suggest that route. Go to a mall or other large parking lot where you can practice shifting thru all gears up AND down MANY times. If that works for you then either "borrow" the boots for the run or go get your own set. If it doesn't try a toe / heel shifter and practice, practice, practice before doing it live in a pack. Missing a gear in a pack is not fun. I did it a couple of years ago riding 2up on a wing and almost had to buy new shorts. Good luck. |
