dont worry calibre1 the FNG button changes every year, and it was pink camo anyway, you will wear it proudly. FNG only lasts one year, or does it? My plate on my bike reads FNG05. So I am stuck with it, and there is a guy out there with a road name of FNG too.

You know you are an FNG when you can't believe your eyes at all the people who truly support our troops. When those people come out and stand along the freeways, line the streets and work hard to present the Run with moments of pure joy. Yeah; nothing like being an FNG. Can I go away and come back as FNG again? No; but I can watch the wonder in a 2011 FNG and know in my heart what they are experiencing is shared by all who participate: Love for the mission. |

Now I may be wrong, but after being Caliber1's brother for 47 wonderful years I believe his question about the pink button was not so much about the pink button but rather a comment on the fact that he would not know it was pink. For those of you that do not know yet, we are both color blind. So...give us pink buttons and tell us they are gray and we will be good to go. My wife laughed after I had been in the Army for about 2 years and I asked why in the heck they would make our fatigues brown when the woods we would fight in were green.

G'day Commodog, I hadn't read anything sinister into any of Caliber1's comments - I looked at his curiosity to be more about the nature of what the button was for, rather than making any judgements on the colour pink & whatever perceived "baggage" that it brings with it. 2009's FNG badge was a pink camo, 2010 from the photos I've seen was a musty green/white Camo, I guess you'll find out what colour 2011 will be when you rock up to registration.
I think that it's Thursdays on the run that you'll see some participants wear pink baseball caps/bandannas/T-shirts & all their doing is trying to raise awareness of the need to better fund breast cancer research. Fridays it's red, to show support for the troops that are out in harms way defending our freedoms.
I'm comfortable enough in my masculinity to wear pink for a worthy cause, just as I'm ok with wearing a red clown nose to work once a year in support of S.I.D.S. research, (although it makes me look like a bit of a clown) or going bald once a year for the "shave for a cure" crew.

Cargochute, I did not take it as anything sinister. My brother and I have always had a good laugh at our being color blind and at times others do not understand what in the heck we are talking about. Caliber1 is secure in his masculinity concerning pink as well, he thought he was buying a pink bike. Found out later it was black.
dyed my hair blue last April fool to surprise my secretary, she called in sick! The can said it was blue.

Yeah, no worries. Not concerned about what color a button is, just hadn't heard about a button at all.
Cargochute, thanks for the reminder about the red shirt, wear one every Friday here, but just added it to the packing list for the run.
I do have a pink t-shirt I got for doing a mile walk for the cure a few years ago. Edited by caliber1 - Apr-22-2011 at 6:50am |

I had red work shirts made just for Fridays. If I'm not mistaken, my Brother has one that I gave him. Until now I had not heard about pink on Tuesdays.

The one upside in all this is that from what the Doctors are saying, is if we could only throw enough cash at this partiular cancer, we'd have it solved in 5 to 10 years & that they could move onto solving the more viralent types in a type of cascading domino effect. In the meantime, raising awareness about the need for examinations & mamograms could prevent so many unnecessary deaths.

Just for your comfort the FNG Buttons let other folks know that it is your first run. Now I figured this was so my Brother could find me but in reality it lets those that have been there before know who need to be looked after. I mean my first year when there was free gas in KS I went and got mine, then told my brother about it, he was not an FNG but he had never been past Colorado so I sort of got to look after him. Anyway the button thing is actually an honor. You will find out. Now for the shirt thing of course his is red, and I will stick to that story

you know you are an FNG when you try to fit 200 pounds of stuff in a 50 pound bag. Somehow I have got to get those cool undies packed. What not to take...........
