Just got word that there may be a run on Route 66 starting Sept. 11. Chicago to Santa Monica. Maybe I could be an FNG on this new run. I rode about 50% of 66 coming back from DC a few weeks ago. Need more info if anyone has it.

The EOW was May 28 2011. You and I are still here Harley0711 so we should make the best of it. The next EOW is Dec. 22 2012. We have enough time to do one more RFTW if anyone wants to join me.

Been two weeks home and today I washed the bike and started it up. I feel a ride coming on. So on my next birthday we leave for RFTW 2012 (a leap year). So only 300+ days left. May 16th is almost here.

Day 20 complete. 675 mile ride today with a start on the road at 0400 PST hours and very cold. Had to wear all of the leathers this morning through Flagstaff. The smoke has moved to the south so that did help. Stopped by Williams AZ just to see what it looks like without the snow and ice. Spoke to one of the locals and she still does not know how we made it through all of the bad weather. She is counting the days until we come through next year. By the time I got to Needles CA it was about 100 degrees. Very strong winds again today with gusts 50+ in Barstow. At 1700 hours I rode into the Indian Wells Valley. Home of China Lake and my home. 13 hours on this the final leg of my journey. Not sure why but it seemed that I had never left. I guess for me it will take some time to take it all in. So again, I say thank you all for your support and prayers. This part of my life journey has now ended but at the end of one journey a new journey will begin…. |

Thanks Shadow. Day 19 compete after a 650 mile ride. Currently in Gallop NM. Still windy and the last 75 miles was in
smoke. Looks like there are three fires
in NM and AZ. One of the locals told me
that yesterday the visibility was down to 100 ft. I first saw the smoke from Albuquerque. Over 300 sq. miles burned so far. Not sure I will make it home tomorrow but
going to give it a try.

Thank you SheWolf and Shadow. Day 18 completed early.
Left Joplin MO this morning. Very
hard to do with so much undone and new friends.
God bless you in your recovery.
Temps are very high today. 98
with winds at 30 mph gusting to 50 west of Oklahoma City. That little voice inside said I needed to
stop soon so I ended this day at Weatherford OK. Only 300 miles today but that was all I could
do. On to day 19. Hopefully I will get 500 miles done tomorrow.

Cashmb I am truely greatfult to hear there is some good news and new freindships forged out of that tragedy. Your posts allow me to see the journey through your eyes and it is very enjoyable to travel with you as you made your way accross America as an FNG and now return home as an accomplished "all the way" participant. Please travel safe looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you next year.

Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation. Thanks SheWolf

Very short ride today. Day 17 complete.
Still in Joplin. Had breakfast at
a fast-food place. Very long line then
walks in a local policeman and National Guardsman. 15 minute wait in line so I invite them to
join me and buy them breakfast. They
told me more stories about the tornado.
There is a lot more good about the post tornado than bad but there is
some very bad. I had time to visit with
several of the locals with more stories of escaping with their lives. Many of the displaced families are staying in
the hotel I am at. All of the people on
the missing list have now been accounted for.
I rode the path of the tornado.
Nearly ten miles long. 5,000 structures
gone. 18,000 vehicles destroyed. Meet a state trooper at the Hospital that was
destroyed. Turns out he helped escort us
(central route) across MO. He saw my
RFTW 2011 pin on my vest and told me he had the 2010 pin. I need to buy another 2011 pin now but he is
a very happy State Trooper. Time for
lunch and to my surprise I meet a RFTW southern route rider. Phil or Smiley as some call him. He was on his way back to AZ. I am already making plans to stop here on the
2012 RFTW. Already made new friends
here. They are all great people. On to day 18.

Very good ride heading back west today. Day 16, just arrived in Joplin MO. The ride from Poplar MO to Joplin was very nice. Riding through the Ozarks was not only beautiful but very relaxing. At times I was the only person as far as the eye could see on the 60 Interstate. Eight miles east of Joplin I saw moderate tornado damage along the 44. I rode directly to the Harley dealer and had my bike serviced quickly. Talking with the service manager I found out that Bob, the inventory manager was killed in the tornado. He left behind a wife and two small children. The service manager, Chris, lost his best friend Jim and Jim’s two small children. Only his wife survived. The owner of the dealership, Scott told me to ride just 1000 yards up the road and see the destruction for myself. Nothing could have prepared me for this. The news media cannot capture the devastation. The smell of the destruction is something I will never forget. Everyone in Joplin (about 50,000) has been directly affected. My hotel is only a block from ground zero. The heat index here is about 98. National Guard, FEMA, all of the Insurance companies, contractors, thousands of volunteers all here to help. Sadly, it is not enough. As I rode through the site I could see a single person at their former small business tying to clean up. I did visit several businesses that were open and the people seem to be doing well. I spoke to a 17 year old teen who said his family lost their home but life goes on. The people in Joplin are a very courage’s people. There are still people who are missing. Please pray for them. We will see what day 17 brings. |
